20th Anniversary: Signatures of Sustainability

WHC's successes to date only inspire us and our members to strive for even more in the next 20 years. WHC's newest program, Signatures of Sustainability, captures this spirit to celebrate how far we have come, but more importantly, to chart the future.

GM LDT Northern Flicker
A northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) keeps a watchful eye at the GM Lansing Delta Township wildlife area, which was honored with WHC's 2006 Rookie of the Year award.

A Signature of Sustainability is a habitat program that demonstrates the potential of private sector involvement for biodiversity conservation.

These programs make the communities around them a better place for both biodiversity and learners of all ages, and represent the very highest standards for a WHC program.

Each Signature of Sustainability is unique, but all go above and beyond certification standards for Wildlife at Work.

A Blue Ribbon Committee of outside judges selected 21 Signatures of Sustainability. The panel consisted of Lynn Greenwalt, former Director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bob Perciasepe, Chief Operating Officer, National Audubon Society and Jennifer Joy Wilson, President and CEO, National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association.

The selected program met a stringent set of requirements, including certification as a WHC Wildlife at Work program. Programs were evaluated based on a ranking system with points given per level of involvement in focus areas, such as environmental education, habitat enhancement and community involvement.

Each Signature of Sustainability met certain requirements, including:

  • Go above and beyond certification standards for Wildlife at Work;
  • Have a team of dedicated employees and/or community members;
  • Demonstrate the connection to a larger scope, such as flyways, environmental education, ecological restoration, or connections to corridors or other neighboring projects;
  • Have potential to serve as a model for other land stewards; and
  • Be certified, or committed to becoming certified for Corporate Lands for Learning by 2010.
