Cuyahoga Habitat Partnership Background Information

Purpose

WHC will seek to initiate successful habitat demonstration sites at corporate facilities in the Cuyahoga Valley region of Ohio. The partnership aims to demonstrate how corporate and private properties can be linked on a geographic scale to contribute to greenspace preservation, wildlife conservation, and watershed health.

The primary objective will be to promote involvement of corporations in habitat enhancement. Corporate habitats can serve as important buffer zones within a watershed, corridors to protect local ecosystems, outdoor classrooms, and harbors of valuable communities such as wetlands and native grasslands. To this end, we will seek to initiate successful habitat demonstration sites at corporate facilities in the region.  We will strive for 3 pilot habitats by the end of 2004, with funding from the Gund Foundation.

The CHP aims to demonstrate how corporate and private properties can be linked on a geographic scale to contribute to greenspace preservation, wildlife conservation, and community wellbeing. The CHP will also search for potential sites within or near areas of special concern such as riparian corridors, wetlands, or areas of high restoration potential. Particular attention will be given to areas of greenspace and existing programs in order to leverage their impact.

In addition to corporate habitats, the CHP will also initiate the Adopt-a-Watershed program where a company can help it's local watershed organization with funding, manpower, and on-site projects. In return, the company will receive assistance and support from the watershed, a site visit and customized report from WHC, and technical guidance from the Cuyahoga River Community Planning Organization.
