The Cartersville Brewery is located on the north side of the city of Cartersville in Bartow County, Georgia. The brewery itself is located on a 1,700-acre parcel of land between a ridgeline on the south and wetlands to the north. The site's Resource Recovery Farm (RRF) consists of approximately 1,500 acres of woodland habitats, cleared grasslands and shrublands, as well as emergent and forested wetlands, and intermittent and perennial streams. Both facilities lie within the Piedmont Physiographic Province of Northern Georgia, which is characterized by rolling red-clay hills and fertile, mineral-rich farmland.
One of the primary focuses of the wildlife program is wild game management. The site coordinates an annual controlled hunt for both deer and wild turkeys on acreage of both the brewery and the RRF. Several organizations assist with the hunts, including the Quality Deer Management Association, National Wild Turkey Federation and Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Food plots are maintained on 350 acres of the property to provide supplemental food sources for the deer and turkeys.
Another focus on the site is timber management. The team obtained a Forest Stewardship Plan from the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) in the summer of 2006 for the Resource Recovery Farm. Forested tracts are planted with longleaf pine, saw-tooth oak and mixed-fruit producing trees. Pine forests are thinned to create brush piles for small mammal habitat. The team conducts controlled burns of forested areas of the property to promote the growth of understory plants and to mimic the natural processes undergone by native longleaf pine stands of forest. In the spring of 2008, 38,000 longleaf pine seedlings were planted on 109 acres. On November 8, 2008, at the annual Ducks Unlimited Greenwing event, the team was presented the Certified Forest Steward award from the GFC.
Many other projects have been implemented at the site, as well. The team stocked various ponds on the site with catfish and crappie. In the wetland areas of Grassdale Pond, the team implemented an invasive species removal program in order to eradicate parrot feather, kudzu and other invasives that had overgrown the pond. In 2007, the team created and enhanced existing vernal pools. An inventory in 2008 revealed the presence of the mole salamander, marbled salamander, spotted salamander and southern cricket frog. In the summer of 2007, the team had a Wetland Conservation and Management Plan prepared.
In 2008, a project was initiated with a Troop 25 Eagle Scout to construct and install bluebird boxes along the Entrance Lawn walking trail. The team worked with local Boy Scout Troop 25 in 2007 on a Raptor Perch Project at the RRF to install six raptor perches.
In 2006, the Cartersville Brewery received Corporate Lands for Learning certification for a program focusing on the educational needs of Boy Scouts, including Eagle Scouts' requirement to complete community-oriented projects based in conservation. Since then the wildlife management team has continued its partnership with local Boy Scouts and prospective Eagle Scouts to complete several projects which enhance habitat for wildlife. Projects completed between 2006 and 2008 include creation of nesting habitat for Kill Deer, construction and installation of six raptor perches, a whitetail deer survey, and an RRF Workday in which scouts monitored and cleaned bluebird boxes and planted trees to provide shelter and food.
The Cartersville Brewery has most recently cultivated a new partnership with a local school, Kingston Elementary. Cartersville volunteers, students, and teachers were involved in activities such as "Neat Nesters", "Bold Bat Box Builders", "Mighty Mulchers", "Dynamite Dust Busters", "Terrific Trailblazers", and "Peppy Planters". All activities helped to revitalize the "Living Classroom" located on school grounds.
In addition, the Cartersville Brewery site has continued to hold its annual Charity Sporting Shoot. This two day event provides the community an opportunity to learn eye safety and firearm handling safety. In addition, the event encourages outdoor recreation, wildlife appreciation, and environmental stewardship. Monies raised during the event are put back into community organizations such as Boy Scouts of America and 4-H.
