ES 101: An Introduction to the Products and Services Ecosystems Provide:  10:15 - 11:45 a.m.
This session will introduce the concept of ecosystem services to those not as familiar or who need a refresher. Key themes will include corporate sustainability, biodiversity and land management.

This panel will welcome attendees and guests as well as discuss how WHC will enhance its certification program by recognizing members for implementing ecosystem service strategies on their land. The benefits of implementing ecosystem services into site management practices of corporations involved with WHC programs will also be presented.

There are currently dozens of tools available that measure various aspects relating to ecosystem services from carbon sequestration to wildlife habitat and recreation value. Some of these tools, however, are more aligned with the WHC mission: to increase the amount of quality wildlife habitat on corporate, private, and public lands. The WHC Ecosystem Services Working Group (ESWG) Tools and Resources Subcommittee and other experts will introduce the WHC ES Toolbox- a collection of tools that will help to achieve the WHC mission while also providing valuable information regarding the management of corporate lands.

Case Study #1 - Lafarge Presque Isle Quarry: The 5,000-acre Presque Isle Quarry is located on the western shore of Lake Huron in Michigan. Lafarge has made a commitment to establish biodiversity management plans at quarry sites, annually monitor the sites, and report the status of implementation in Lafarge’s Sustainability Report. In order to become better stewards of the environment, Lafarge is working to adapt ecosystem services modeling tools to suit business purposes and enhance ecological biodiversity. This project will assess various ecosystem services models on their usefulness in improving biodiversity management and land use planning by Lafarge and other corporate landholders.

Case Study #2 - Business Approach - Stay Tuned!

Case Study #3 - Conservation Return on Investment: A study done to analyze the financial return of public investments in conservation easements and protection of habitat. The results of valuation of property value based on habitat type will be presented, as well as cost benefit analysis of protecting public land in both the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-Western regions.

The Corporate Need for Ecosystem Services: 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
This session will look at the risks, opportunities and incentives for corporations to invest time and money into ES perspectives. A discussion will be held to investigate the need for ES on corporate lands.

New questions generated from the ideas shared will help to determine future goals and expand the knowledge base of the WHC Ecosystem Services Working Group.
