Wildlife Habitat Council's 1st Annual
Ecosystem Services on Corporate Lands Conference

On June 11-12, 2009, the Wildlife Habitat Council, in collaboration with the World Resources Institute, hosted its first Ecosystem Services on Corporate Lands Conference. The goal of the conference was to educate WHC members, as well as corporate and conservation partners, on the connections between habitat management, biodiversity conservation, and sustainability with ecosystem service-based strategies.  Focusing on ecosystem services valuation, markets, strategies and offsets, this introductory conference was the first step in a year-long collaborative inquiry process.

The initial sessions of the conference were designed to provide baseline training to the attendees on what are ecosystem services using the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s “Buy, Sell Trade” Game, and how to conduct an ecosystem services review using the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the WRI Ecosystem Services Review (ESR) model.

The conference opening speakers, Robert Johnson and Craig Hanson, and keynote speakers Sally Collins, and Lloyd Timberlake, addressed the evolution of ecosystem services as an important and rapidly evolving environmental/conservation aspect in the preservation of biodiversity, wildlife and their habitats, and other natural systems by incorporating ecosystem services dependencies, risks and opportunities into new products, markets, business practices and/or the sustainable development’s triple bottom line.  The WBCSD/WRI have commenced programs focusing on ecosystems services education, risks and opportunities reviews and development of an ecosystem services economic valuation model that can be used by WHC and its member companies to enhance their triple bottom line and to strengthen WHC’s existing wildlife habitat core programs.

One of the key objectives of the initial Ecosystem Services Conference was to develop relevant information/input from a series of stakeholder panels to help business and WHC’s member companies and WHC better understand ecosystem services, the future needs of business and identify opportunities for incorporating key ecosystem services elements, i.e., education, review and economic valuation, into WHC’s existing core wildlife habitat programs, Wildlife at Work and Corporate Lands for Learning.

The second day of the conference focused on a series of break out sessions designed to assist WHC’s business member companies to better understand ecosystem services, ecosystem services programmatic opportunities and obstacles, and potential next steps forward.

Thank you for making WHC's first annual Ecosystem Services on Corporate Lands Conference a great success!
