BP - Whiting Refinery The Whiting Refinery is committed to providing a safe, environmentally sound, atmosphere for employees and neighbors; competitively priced, quality products for our customers; and economic support and leadership for the Northwest Indiana area. The Whiting Refinery has announced its intentions to develop close to 500 acres of preused properties surrounding the Refinery. These lands will be developed in partnership with the Cities of Whiting and Hammond as well as the other stakeholders such as the EPA, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, and the Indiana State Commerce Department. Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center The Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center is a regional resource dedicated to residential environmental education. With the 15,000 acres of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, authorized by Congress in 1966, as its backyard, learners of all ages can participate in programs that develop an appreciation and understanding of the relationship between people and the environment along the southern shores of Lake Michigan. International Steel Group - Burns Harbor Inc. Facility ISG Burns Harbor Inc. is located along the shore of Lake Michigan near Chicago, Illinois. The principal flat rolled products are hot-rolled, cold-rolled and coated sheets for the automotive, service center, container, office furniture and appliance markets. Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) is a multi-purpose sub-state area-wide planning agency. NIRPC operates as a cooperative of local governments within the three county area. It is currently comprised of fifty-one members. Save the Dunes Council The Save the Dunes Council of northwest Indiana was founded in 1952, one of the oldest grassroots conservation organizations in the country. Its objectives are to maintain and restore the integrity and quality of the natural environment of the Indiana Dunes region. The hard work of Save the Dunes Council members led to the establishment of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966; the group continues to work on a wide variety of issues concerning the Dunes and the environmental quality of the area. The efforts of the Save the Dunes Council are supported entirely by membership dues, donations and volunteer time. Taltree Arboretum & Gardens Taltree Arboretum and Gardens will establish and maintain woody plant collections, gardens, and natural areas for the benefit of the people in the South Lake Michigan Region. The Nature Conservancy - Southern Lake Michigan Rim Project Office The Southern Lake Michigan Rim Project Office is working with a variety of partners to help protect the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and other natural areas throughout Northwest Indiana. The Southern Lake Michigan Rim lies along the southern shore of Lake Michigan in Lake, Porter and LaPorte Counties — a region well known for its heavy industry and dense urbanization. An exceptional diversity of plant and animal life, including more than 350 species of bird that inhabit this region while nesting or migrating. United States Steel Corporation - Gary Works Gary Works, situated on approximately 3,000 acres on the south shore of Lake Michigan, is U.S. Steel's largest manufacturing plant. Gary Works, an integrated steel making operation, is committed to prevention of pollution to achieve minimal adverse impact on the air, water and land through programs that incorporate responsible environmental management practices. U.S. Steel is conducting a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action program at Gary Works. The Corrective Action program includes activities, such as reviewing current and historical environmental information for the Facility and collecting samples of soil and groundwater.
