President’s Message

Creating a Sustainable Future

The year 2001 will be remembered by many for the events of September 11, which dominated the international political agenda and posed new challenges to our conservation community. The Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) and its members and supporters together forged new avenues for conserving our nation’s lands inspired by the idea that conserving wildlife and natural resources remains important even in the face of other priorities. In 2001, we worked to launch new sustainable initiatives while holding to our main principals.

Through the "Fifty for the Future" campaign, we extended our outreach through community-based environmental education programs. The Three Rivers Habitat Partnership (TRHP) won the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Watershed Stewardship. And thousands of grant dollars were awarded, through the U.S. Environmental Agency's groundbreaking Five Star Restoration Challenge Grant projects – transforming or reclaiming lands to wetlands areas. However, the real strength of our organization came from questioning, testing and renewing our mission with each project – small or large.

We must explore how we can best prepare to meet the environmental challenges of today and tomorrow through projects on working landscapes, on restoration of old industrial sites and by expanding our efforts to a regional and global scope.

2001 Annual Report

Since 1988, the Wildlife Habitat Council has been dedicated to increasing the quality and amount of wildlife habitat on corporate, private and public lands. WHC devotes its resources to building partnerships with corporations and conservation groups to create solutions that balance the demands of economic growth with the requirements of a healthy, biodiverse and sustainable environment. More than 1.2 million acres in 46 states, Puerto Rico and twelve other countries are managed for wildlife through WHC-assisted projects.
