Fostering a Stewardship Ethic An organization’s mission is the underlying principal that guides all endeavors. In 1988, a group of individuals, organizations and corporations came together to create the Wildlife Habitat Council with one idea in mind – work to increase the amount of quality wildlife habitat on corporate, private and public lands. With that basic goal in mind, more than a decade later, we have with our members protected and managed 1.3 millions acres of land reaching across to countries as far away as Brazil, Canada, China, United Kingdom…each site unique and special. The WHC Board of Directors plays a major role in the success of the organization. This attribute is the result of a diverse and balanced organization. To ensure this, twenty-five percent of our board members are from conservation organizations, sixty percent are from corporations and fifteen percent are unaffiliated. The dedicated volunteers and members of the Board are directly involved in developing and redefining the strategic planning behind WHC programs. These programs allow members to improve outreach efforts in local communities as well as the numerous ecological issues impacting the world at large. Achievements In 2001, many of our members from across the globe were recognized for their progress with habitat and educational programs at their facilities. Local and national media paid special attention to these achievements, with one local paper citing how "Restoring rolling corporate campus acreage to natural habitat makes good business sense…fostering the development of native species of plants and animals." (Sisson, Mary, "Walking on the Wild Side," The NJ Times, 17 June 2001). The 13th Annual Symposium, Science & Stewardship: Creating Greener Communities, celebrated these distinguished sites that shape our communities. We came together in our nation’s capital to honor sites for achieving certification and recertification of programs, as well as distinguish a select few with our prestigious National Conservation Awards: Community Partner of the Year Jerry Newman in cooperation with Bridgestone/Firestone Americas Holding Inc. New Beginnings, The Woodlawn Wildlife Area (Maryland) Corporate Lands for Learning of the Year BP North America, Inc., Cooper River Plant (South Carolina) (first-time recipient)
