Huron to Erie Project’s 2013 Regional Award Winners

The awards are regional versions of WHC’s Corporate Habitat of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Community Partner of the Year awards. Programs eligible for awards were those in the Lake Huron to Lake Erie corridor that were certified or re-certified in 2012. Wildlife Habitat Council Announces Regional Corporate Habitat Conservation Awards

SOUTHFIELD MI—Employees at DTE Energy River Rouge Power Plant and ITC’s Corporate Headquarters received bi-national recognition for their contributions to wildlife habitat conservation at the Wildlife Habitat Council Huron to Erie Waterways for Wildlife Project’s 2013 Habitat Celebration on April 3. OPG Lambton Generating Station: Small Species, Big Picture When you think of wildlife, you probably don’t think of tufts of moss. But employees at Ontario Power Generation’s Lambton Generating Station near Sarnia take a comprehensive view of the biological communities on their site. When they discovered the endangered spoon-leaved moss on their property, they began monitoring its locations, alerting the transmission line company that works on site, and educating employees and community members. At its annual Habitat Celebration in April, WHC’s Huron to Erie Waterways for Wildlife Project’s advisory committee recognized two habitat programs from the region for outstanding environmental stewardship and voluntary employee efforts. The Regional Corporate Habitat of the Year Award was given to Ontario Power Generation’s Lambton Generating Station, while the Seedling Corporate Habitat of the Year Award went to DTE Energy’s Conners Creek Power Plant. BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI—Employees at DTE Energy’s Conners Creek Power Plant received regional recognition for their contributions to wildlife habitat conservation at the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) Huron to Erie Waterways for Wildlife Project’s 2012 Habitat Celebration on April 24. WHC Members Top “Michigan Green Leaders” List

Results are in: the Detroit Free Press’ selections for the 2012 Michigan Green Leaders include two WHC members, plus two more as honorable mentions. General Motors was recognized among large businesses for their landfill-free program at manufacturing and other locations. Among the imaginative ways of re-using items has been the conversion of Chevy Volt battery cases into nest boxes for wood ducks! Delta Dental of Michigan was recognized for its green re-design of the company’s Lansing headquarters, including shoreline habitat at an existing retention pond. Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital Honored as Michigan Green Leader

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, certified for Wildlife at Work, was one of 16 entities honored by the Detroit Free Press as a Michigan Green Leader. More than 250 nominees were submitted for this statewide honor. The Free Press established the awards in 2010 “to identify the best practices and the true leaders pulling us forward” toward a sustainable future, said Free Press Deputy Managing Editor Randy Essex. This year’s honorees are “all working to preserve resources, protect health and move toward a diversified, sustainable economy. Fighting Island Sturgeon Spawning Habitat Rocks

Sixteen lake sturgeon that were raised from eggs collected at a constructed spawning reef off Fighting Island are being tagged for science and released into the Detroit River to celebrate the successful restoration effort. Fighting Island, in the Canadian waters of the Detroit River, is owned and managed by WHC member BASF. BASF employees at the island coordinate a successful Wildlife at Work program and an award-winning Corporate Lands for Learning Program.
