Description:

The Brownwood Quarry is a rock quarry located in central Texas. The 2,200-acre site consists mainly of grasslands, rock areas and man-made lakes, and is home to a healthy diversity of wildlife. Many species of birds frequent the ponds and office area, and many other wildlife species common to the Edwards Plateau, including bald eagles, bobcat, coyote, red-ear slider turtles, western diamondback rattlesnakes and white-tailed deer are encountered near the working and abandoned pit areas.

In 1994, the wildlife habitat program was initiated at the quarry when plant operations were moved to a more remote location. Employees at the site volunteer their time to maintain a successful wildlife habitat program, which focuses on habitat and species-specific enhancements. Active projects include the maintenance of a purple martin habitat, fish stocking and feeding in the ponds, the beginnings of a pollinator garden, and a turtle habitat consisting of a pond with logs and rocks ideal for basking and hiding. In the future, the wildlife team plans to explore a partnership with a local wildlife rehabilitator and install mallard nesting tubes.
