Vulcan Materials Company

Site name: Stockbridge Quarry
Location: Stockbridge, GA USA
Wildlife at Work certified since: 1992

Description:

The Stockbridge Quarry encompasses 762 acres of freshwater wetlands, woodlands and open fields. Employees actively manage approximately 400 acres of the site as wildlife habitat.

The team's newest project is the butterfly garden, which was planted in March 2009. With the advice of a landscaping company, eight employee volunteers planted species such as sunflowers that attract butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Wildlife team members and other employee volunteers monitor and maintain seven nest boxes for eastern bluebirds and nine nest boxes for wood ducks. The nest boxes were built by Boy Scouts and volunteers from the Georgia Outdoor Network and erected in 1993. Since 2007, monitoring revealed that 32 eastern bluebirds and 137 wood ducks successfully fledged from the site's nest boxes.

Also in place since 1993, is the team's food plot program. Employees routinely plant five food plots around the property, which are used by native game species such as white-tailed deer and wild turkey. Both the food plots and nest boxes are featured during tours of the site that employees provide for local school children and community groups.
