Description:
The Enka Quarry is located on 389 acres in Buncombe County. The site is an active quarry where employees have worked hard to incorporate habitat and environmental education into daily operations. The wildlife team has developed partnerships with Enka High School Industrial Arts Class, Boy Scouts of America Troop #40, Leicester Elementary School, and WNC Nature Center. The goals of the wildlife habitat program are to enhance the site for native wildlife and share these resources with the community, primarily through educational opportunities. The wildlife enhancement areas are an added attraction that offers an excellent learning experience for school children who visit the quarry for tours. In 2008 the wildlife team and local school children created a wildlife library that provides educational opportunities to employees and the community. Employees maintain an active nest box monitoring program and plant native tree seedlings. The wildlife team, Boy Scout Troop #40 and Enka High School Industrial Arts Class recently built and erected 27 nesting boxes, replacing the 7 original boxes. The monitoring of the boxes has revealed that bluebirds and chickadees are utilizing the new boxes. The local Boy Scout troop also assisted in the planting of 70 native trees on 45 acres of the habitat area. They planted a variety of trees, including, black cherry, black walnut, flowering dogwood, red oak, pin oak, and white oak.
The wildlife team plans to manage for small mammals by constructing brush piles and installing bat boxes. Plans to enhance the front office with the addition of a pollinator garden are currently underway.
