St. Clair Power Plant

DTE Energy
Detroit Edison
St. Clair Power Plant
East China Township, MI USA

Certified since: 2001

The St. Clair Power Plant in located on 1,700 acres in St. Clair County, Michigan. The 12-person Green Team identified and incorporated a number of enhancement projects since its inception. The first goal identified by the wildlife team was to further naturalize selected regions of the property through a rotational mowing schedule. Mowing was limited in areas adjacent to wastewater basins, as well as in more remote regions of the property. As much as possible, natural vegetation has been permitted to grow, thereby enhancing opportunities for wildlife to thrive. Team members have seen increased instances of nesting activities among Canada geese, mallards and wood ducks.

The second goal included constructing, installing and monitoring nesting structures for blue birds, mallards and wood ducks. The Green Team constructed and placed 24 bluebird boxes, 12 mallard nesting tubes, and 2 wood duck nest cavities, in cooperation with local Boy Scouts. In conjunction with this goal, a nest box nature trail was created to facilitate the regular maintenance and monitoring of the boxes. In addition, Green Team members, along with six scout members, planted approximately 100 spruce saplings in September 2002. The proximity of this project to the adjacent roadway has helped to increase awareness among plant personnel concerning efforts in the habitat area. To capitalize on this awareness, the Green Team is planning to construct a native butterfly garden in the near future.
