Ontario Power Generation

Lambton Generating Station
Courtright, ON Canada
Certified since: 1997

Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Lambton Generating Station is located on the St. Clair River about 26 kilometers south of Sarnia, Ontario. The site contains a total of 1,100 acres, of which 238 acres consist of natural areas that support the wildlife management plan implemented by employees at the site. The primary goals of all activities are to maintain and enhance wildlife habitat on-site, partner with the community in habitat enhancement initiatives and educate and involve employees in the wildlife habitat program.

To date, the wildlife management plan has addressed a number of key habitat components at the site. The local conservation authority and a local school group helped plant a 10-hectare fallow field with 11,000 native trees to reconnect a valuable wooded corridor, restore three hectares of tall grass prairie and provide bird nesting habitat with artificial nesting structures. Since its creation, the tallgrass prairie plantation was reseeded, controlled burns were conducted and new species test plots were created through partnerships with the Sydnenham Field Naturalists and the Rural Lambton Stewardship Network. The success of the small tallgrass prairie test plots will likely be expanded into the ash disposal area vegetation capping in the future.

OPG also recognizes that wildlife habitat improvement can be achieved by creating partnerships between private landowners and state, federal and provincial agencies. These partnerships are exemplified by Lambton Generating Station’s extensive outreach campaigns each year during Earth Day and an active participation in the Wildlife Habitat Council’s St. Clair River Waterways for Wildlife Project. This group is part of an international coalition of individuals, corporations, conservation authorities and state, federal and provincial agencies in a voluntary coordinated effort to enhance habitat for wildlife in the St. Clair River Basin.
