Community Outreach:
In 1997, Duquense Light began a partnership with Pittsburgh Voyager (Voyager), an educational organization that operates two “floating laboratories” that tour Pittsburgh’s three rivers. Both the Voyager and Discovery are 80 foot former U.S. Navy training vessels that have facilities on-board for teaching school groups and the general public about river ecology. This year Voyager stopped at Brunot Island several times with summer river camp students. The Discovery was used for the first Duquense Light “Brunot Island Discovery Tour” for employees and their families. Their day consisted of a walking tour of the island, the Voyager ecology program, and a cruise on the three rivers. Each of these groups walked the nature trail created by the wildlife team to learn about the unique natural and cultural history of the island. This partnership brings over 100 visitors to Brunot Island each summer.
