TRHP Beaver BC-01

Brush Creek Riparian Zone, March 04, before planting

TRHP Beaver BC-02

Brush Creek Erosion, March 04, before planting

Designed and implemented by the Three Rivers Habitat Partnership

Description
The Beaver County Conservation District was awarded a Growing Greener Grant by the Department of Environmental Protection in order to establish and enhance riparian buffers along targeted portions of Brady’s Run and Brush Creek located in two community parks in county townships.

At Brady’s Run, in Brighton Township, native shrubs and trees were planted along the shaded side of the stream.  At Brush Creek, in Marion Township, native trees and shrubs along with a wildflower meadow were planted along both shaded and sunny sides of the stream.

In addition, no mow signs have been and interpretive signs will be placed along the buffer as an educational tool for park visitors.  The park plantings will serve as demonstrations to the community about the importance of streamside buffers as well as serve to encourage similar efforts in backyards across Beaver County.

The
Beaver County sites are among the four Backyard Buffers demonstration sites.

Past Activities

  • August 2003 – Notification of award to partners and contractors.
  • October 2003 – TRHP conducted site visits and a stakeholder meeting was held.
  • Early Spring 2003 – Plants lists were finalized and native suppliers contacted for ordering.
  • May 21 & 22, 2004 – With the assistance of TRHP, the partners planted over 700 native trees and shrubs between both the Brady’s Run and Brush Creek sites.  These plants will help stabilize the banks, capture runoff from roads and lawn, and help prevent sediments from entering the stream.  In addition, no mow signs were installed at both sites.
  • June 2004 – Beaver County Conservation District planted a native wildflower meadow including over 400 wildflowers.

On the Horizon
In summer 2004, educational interpretive signs will be designed and then installed at both sites. Throughout June 2005, the Beaver County Conservation District will monitor the sites and replace any trees, shrubs, and wildflowers that do not survive.
