Director of Finance and Operations

Position Overview

This position contributes to WHC’s overall mission by leading and supporting seamless financial, operational, and human resource management systems, procedures, and processes. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of non-profit and fund accounting and a passion for working collaboratively across departments. They will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision-making and with budget managers in performance management. In addition, they will have excellent written and oral communication skills, and a keen interest in WHC’s mission. This role supervises an Operations Manager and reports to the President. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits.

Specific Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Lead the annual dynamic plan (budget) process, monitor expenditures and variances, proactively update income and expense projections, initiate versioning of plan.
  • Work closely with budget managers to provide support and analyses for budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning processes; identify risks and opportunities; support alignment with strategy.
  • Ensure accounting policies, procedures, and controls are current, compliant, and adequate to protect the organization.
  • Participate in the design and tracking of key performance indicators, analyze data to identify useful trends, support enhanced business decisions.
  • Provide support to the Operations Manager in overseeing grants and contracts in adherence with federal awards guidelines and in alignment with projections.
  • Prepare monthly and ad hoc financial reports for internal stakeholders and the Board of Directors; participate in presentation of financial performance at Board meetings.
  • Perform all balance sheet reconciliations (bank accounts, investments, pre-paids, deposits, accruals, depreciation, etc.) and prepare month-end close; manage and track restricted and conditional revenue and maintain updated grid of release from restriction
  • File tax filings, registrations, and other legal requirements on a timely basis.
  • Lead the annual financial audit.

Human Resources

  • Responsible for all human resources functions including hiring practices, employee review policies, and other HR activities.
  • Oversee payroll, benefits administration, recruiting, onboarding, off-boarding, employee check-ins and exit interviews, and other human resource needs.
  • Assure compliance with applicable HR, employment and personnel laws and regulations across multiple states.
  • Support WHC’s Operations team to maintain updated personnel and operations policies and procedures and ensure compliance.

Operations (incl. Technology and Systems)

  • Oversee management and maintenance of all office systems and facilities.
  • Review organizational insurance policies and ensure organization is adequately covered.
  • Ensure continuous compliance with state and federal registration and reporting obligations, including state charity registrations.
  • Participate as member of Senior Leadership team in development and implementation of new policies and procedures.


This position requires an unforgiving eye for detail and accuracy, a comfortable and curious approach to data, and a capacity to interact with a variety of systems and processes. In addition, the successful candidate must be comfortable with responsibilities that range from routine to complex.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting
  • Thorough and complete understanding of GAAP and CAS
  • 5-7 years of experience in a small or mid-sized non-profit organization
  • Experience developing dynamic financial and operational models
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using QuickBooks required
  • Highly detail-oriented with a very low tolerance for errors
  • Ability to take ownership, seek guidance and not require task-to-task management
  • Aptitude for managing multiple tasks with many moving pieces
  • High degree of proficiency with common technology tools including MSOffice (Word, Excel and PowerPoint,) and Microsoft Teams.

Full-time employees starting with the organization accrue up to 20 days of vacation and 10 days of sick leave on an annual basis. All employees can take advantage of paid time off, including 2 volunteer days, 2 floating days, and 10 observed holidays per year. Work Environment

The position is included in WHC’s dispersed workforce plan, providing the employee a choice to work out of the organization’s Bethesda, MD office or from home. This position is mostly office based, with limited physical work. Occasional travel for internal events (staff retreats, WHC Conservation Conference, or similar) is expected. This position includes some light physical work.
