The Senior Manager of Development (Senior Manager) contributes to the WHC mission by supporting and enhancing the organization’s resilience through member acquisition, retention and development. This exciting new position is ideal for an energetic, focused individual to create and secure opportunities to grow WHC’s membership, funding opportunities and WHC Consulting service engagements.

Position Overview

The Senior Manager identifies and secures engagement and funding opportunities with corporate members and prospects across many industries, supporting WHC’s financial objectives. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of revenue generation and fundraising, experience developing and managing business relationships and demonstrate successful sales experience. The Senior Manager creates partnerships across departments to achieve organizational targets, participate in strategic decision-making, and influence growth in support of WHC’s mission. This role reports to the Director of Business Development and works closely with the department manager and Operations team.

Specific Responsibilities


Member Acquisition and Fundraising Activities:

  • Manage corporate lead generation and membership acquisition and development activities.
  • Markets WHC products and services, in collaboration with the Business Development, Marketing and WHC Consulting teams
  • Provide routine analysis and reports of membership revenue projections, pipeline and opportunities.
  • Track trends in corporate conservation, EHS, CSR and related themes.

Member Value-Creation:

  • Design and prepare proposals and scopes of work
  • Coordinate member investment in WHC’s mission, in accordance with organizational workflows and priorities.
  • Manage corporate relationships.
  • Connect members to WHC funded initiatives programming.

Management and Administrative:

  • Manage the WHC Customer Relations Management systems.
  • Track membership information and provides reports to internal stakeholders.
  • Participate in tracking key performance indicators, and analyze data to identify useful trends and support business decisions.
  • Support creation of work procedures and best practices.


Required Qualifications, Competencies, Education or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-10 years of experience in project management, inside or outside sales, and/or roles with high degree of administrative and data management skills
  • Demonstrated sales or account management experience in for-profit or non-profit entities
  • Excellent and efficient communicator; ability to effectively prospect, identify and close new business opportunities
  • High degree of proficiency with virtual work tools including MSOffice and Microsoft Teams (or equivalent)
  • Experience using Customer Relations Management (CRM) systems
  • Ability to work independently, and stay organized and motivated
  • Prior experience participating in proposals or RFP development

Full-time employees starting with the organization accrue up to 20 days of vacation and 10 days of sick leave on an annual basis. Work Environment

The position is included in WHC’s dispersed workforce plan, providing the employee a choice to work out of the organization’s Bethesda, MD office or from home. This position is mostly office based, with limited physical work. Occasional travel for internal events (staff retreats, WHC Conservation Conference, or similar), meetings, and conferences is expected. This position includes some light physical work.
