About the Program
The Sanders Quarry, operated by Vulcan Materials Company, is located alongside Turkey Run, a small tributary of the Potomac River in northern Virginia. The quarry features 2.5 acres of wildlife food & cover plots that help support youth education both on-site and at local schools. Vulcan Materials Company strives to be an environmentally responsible members of the community by making wildlife habitat compatible with their site operations, and by fostering youth and community education.

Practices and Impacts

  • There are two cover plots on site, one with a supplemental food mixture that includes kale and turnips, and the other planted with native grasses and wildflowers. These food plots attract a variety of wildlife, including deer, honeybees, rabbits, turtle, coyotes, turkeys, bald eagles, and blue heron.
  • Employees spend an average of 460 hours per year researching native plants, ordering equipment, preparing the food plots, managing invasive species, and monitoring. Their efforts have proven to be worthwhile and successful, with many native grasslands species establishing on site including rose mallow, red poppy, little bluestem, clover, and more.
  • Site managers have partnered with Greenville Elementary School to offer an Arbor Day celebration with students to learn about trees and wildlife. These activities, which include fun and engaging games such as “tree-tac-toe” and planting white pine seedlings, reach approximately 100 students each year.
  • Educational activities at Greenville Elementary School align with Vulcan’s desire to promote hands-on learning about wildlife and their corporate-level commitment to community education, while also meeting Virginia’s Standards of Learning for Grade 3 science and language arts.
