About the Program
Vulcan Materials Company’s Cabarrus Quarry is located in Concord, North Carolina, northeast of Charlotte. The site is surrounded by residential, commercial and agricultural plots and includes 65 acres of forest and grassland habitat managed for local wildlife species. The habitat provides foraging and breeding opportunities for native species to increase populations, while ponds on-site provide a water source for wildlife. Team members monitor nesting boxes in accordance with the National American Bluebird Society methodology.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2018, the team initiated a forest management project to enhance the habitat for white-tailed deer to combat habitat loss due to deforestation. Employees planted two acres of vegetation to provide foraging opportunities for the deer. Additionally, the team uses trail cameras and visual observations to monitor wildlife on-site.
  • The site adaptively manages 21 bluebird nest boxes that are mounted 5-6 feet off the ground on 1” pipes, approximately 100 yards apart. Predator guards were installed on all nest boxes to protect native avian populations. Nest boxes are monitored frequently for repairs.
