About the Program
Vulcan Materials Company produces aggregates, primarily crushed stone, sand and gravel, used in nearly all forms of construction. The Brownwood Quarry is a rock quarry located in central Texas and consists of mainly grasslands, rock areas and a few man-made lakes. Vulcan is implementing 1 qualifying project in Species – Avian - Purple martin (Progne subis). The project manages 4 multi-compartment purple martin houses within a 1.15-acre grassy area. The conservation objective is "to provide shelter and breeding grounds for Purple Martins, which, in turn, is displayed and presented to visiting school children, as well as employees and contractors."  Employees are engaged in maintaining the martin houses and conducting monitoring.

Practices and Impacts
  • The Team readies the martin houses in January of each year and places bedding in the houses. During the last week of September, the martin houses are cleaned and closed until January.
  • A new martin house is installed in 2020.  The Team observed an increase in martins on the site.
  • Observational monitoring is conducted weekly while the houses are active.  Date, time and weather conditions are recorded.
  • The Team plans to implement a new monitoring protocol in 2021 through a “Martinwatch Nest Data Sheet “. Data collected during the monitoring of the birds during nesting season will be submitted to help in the collection of citizen-scientist based research conducted by the Purple Martin Conservation Association.
