About the Program
The Vulcan Materials Company - Royal Stone Quarry is located in Rockville, Virginia, approximately 20 miles northwest of Richmond. The 204-acre site consists of three acres of forest and seven acres of freshwater wetlands with three connecting ponds. This area has steadily lost natural lands to developing infrastructure, isolating residents from the natural resources. To help resolve this separation, the team maintains an informative nature trail and gardens and promotes avian populations along a forested habitat. Since 1996, the team has also managed on-site pollinator gardens that inspire discussions about conservation among employees and visitors. The goal is to provide adequate protection for wildlife living near the quarry and to educate the public about biodiversity.

Practices and Impacts
  • An on-site pollinator garden attracts and supports local pollinators, contributing to regional biodiversity. The team carries out maintenance to ensure the garden's vitality, establishing a vibrant ecosystem that enhances local environmental health.
  • The team created a nature trail in June 2001 with educational displays of the various animals, birds, insects and plants on-site. The trail is open to the public, especially students, for tours.
