About the Program
The Covia Holding's Corporation plant is located in Emmett, Idaho, just west of the Oregon/Idaho border and north of Boise, Idaho. This plant is also nearly adjacent to the Payette River. There are 166 acres of freshwater wetlands and waterbodies on-site with an additional 138 acres of grasslands. This site boasts a variety of nesting structures to attract an array of native avian species.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2012, American kestrel nesting boxes were installed to provide nesting opportunities for this native species. The nests are checked weekly during the nesting season.
  • Four standing goose nest boxes and two floating goose boxes are located throughout the plant to provide safe nesting opportunities for Canada geese. The nests are monitored weekly and sometimes biweekly. The number of fledglings and geese have increased in numbers over the years.
  • Since 1997, an osprey platform has been monitored and maintained in hopes of discouraging this species from nesting on the powerlines on-site. Weekly monitoring has shown a 100% success rate in 2022.
  • Every year, 5th grade classes in the area come to the mines on-site to learn about the importance of these ecosystems by participating in hikes and tours with learning objectives.
