About the Program
The Tamms/Elco Plants span 2,000 acres in southern Illinois. The plant is composed of one surface mine, a processing plant in Tamms and a processing plant in Elco. The plants are surrounded by residential areas, while the active mine site is surrounded by farms and woodlands.

Practices and Impacts
  • The project team has been protecting a bat hibernacula since 1999 to help protect multiple bat species threatened by white nose syndrome.
  • Monitoring information indicates that from 2018 to 2022, four out of the five species experienced population growth. The mine supports a significant population of Indiana bats and the only one to show a positive growth trend based on the USFWS criteria. The tri-colored bat population has also increased in this mine and may host the largest remaining tricolored bat population.
