About the Program
Georgia Pacific’s Leaf River Cellulose is located in Perry County, Mississippi.  The property is 1,456 acres in size and while the property is primarily managed for sustainable timber production, the Leaf River Cellulose team has included wildlife habitat management as part of their overall operation. Their goals are to provide habitats for multiple wildlife species by managing forested areas to provide a variety of age classes and providing grassland areas for grassland dependent species.

Practices and Impacts
  • The forest habitat consists of a very large forested area. The goal for the project is to provide habitat for wildlife and consists primarily of native species. Harvesting and monitoring is conducted annually.
  •
  • One of the grassland habitat projects focuses on providing habitat for the gopher tortoise. The site is monitored for invasive species as well as the gopher tortoise.
  •
  • The pollinator fields project is a grassland that focuses on providing habitat to local birds. The site is monitored quarterly for wildlife.
