About the Program
CEMEX’s 474 Sand Mine is located in Clermont, Florida, west of Orlando. The program site is an active sand mine that also contains a lake and grassland areas. The team uses the site to host formal learning events for area elementary school children to promote conservation awareness

Practices and Impacts
  • The CEMEX team provides local students in elementary and middle school hands-on learning opportunities at its Engstom Environmental Education Center. Over 1,000 students attend lessons about environmental science at the Center per year. These students learn about topics that align with Florida education standards in an outdoor setting. Lessons include water sampling, owl pellet dissection and plant and fish identification.
  • The team also provides educational opportunities for local high school students in AP Environmental courses. The lessons focus on wetland habitats, sustainable forestry and biodiversity. The hands-on learning opportunities act as an AP-level lab and the activities include testing water quality, assessing a riparian zone, studying soil composition, sampling on-site trees and identifying plants and animals.
