About the Program
CEMEX’s 474 Sand Mine is located in Clermont, Florida, west of Orlando. The program site is an active sand mine that also contains a lake and grassland areas. The team uses the site to host formal learning events for area elementary school children to promote conservation awareness.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team is committed to engaging the local South Lake school community in authentic learning experiences in an outdoor setting. Targeting 3rd-5th graders, students learn ways to improve the local habitat through hands on activities focusing on water quality sampling, mineral and fish identification, and monitoring the local bat, mammal and bird populations. Over 1300 students attended the Engstrom Environmental Education Center each year.
  • In March 2020, the team recognized the need to provide virtual learning opportunities for the local school community as teachers struggled with online learning for the first time. Adapting their in-person lessons, the team ran virtual field trips where students could explore the plants and animals found in their own backyards and learn about the interconnectedness and habitat needs of these organisms. In 2020, the team was able to deliver these virtual field trips to 350 students.
