About the Program
Vulcan Materials Company's Puddledock Sand and Gravel Plant is located near Petersburg, Virginia, and produces construction aggregates for use in building such as gravel, sand and crushed stone. The site contains a mix of grasses, sedges and wooded habitat as well as aquatic habitat from the Appomattox River. The team monitors and manages eight songbird and six wood duck nest boxes and one purple martin house to help provide nesting habitat to improve the reproductive success of these native species.

Practices and Impacts
  • The cavity-nesting bird project began in 2003. The site features eight songbird nest boxes and six wood duck boxes, which they monitor during the breeding season, and perform frequent maintenance to keep the boxes clean and ready for nesting birds. Additionally, a purple martin structure was added in 2020.
  • Multiple boxes were used by both bluebirds and wood ducks in 2022 and 2023. Additionally, other birds such as wrens used some of the bluebird boxes.
