About the Program
The Greenwood Energy Center in Avoca, Michigan, is situated just north of Detroit nearly on the U.S./Canada Border. This power plant is bordered by Lake Huron to the Northeast and Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie to the south. Fifteen acres of this plant are dedicated to maintaining scrub-shrub, forested wetland and upland habitat with the objectives of increasing native vegetation throughout these important habitats and attracting native wildlife to the site.

Practices and Impacts
  • The scrub-shrub, forested wetland and upland habitat project began in April 2006 and has been maintained ever since. The site is monitored every year for invasive species removal and native plant species success. This effort aligns with Monarch Watch's monarch conservation work by providing the crucial milkweed plant species for monarch butterflies.
