CEMEX’S FEC Quarry is adjacent to the east of the Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area in Miami, Florida. The plant produces aggregates, cement and ready-mix concrete. The environmental team created a virtual learning experience to teach Boy Scouts about mining that results in earning a Boy Scout badge.

Practices and Impacts
- In 2021, the team at CEMEX partnered with the Boy Scouts to host two virtual learning classes so the Scouts could earn a badge for mining and geology. In addition to learning about mining, the school-aged children learned about returning land to benefit wildlife after mining is complete.
- Learners took an online quiz before and after the virtual session to assess their knowledge. The evaluation of learners showed a 21% increase in knowledge.
- The project then moved to in-person learning, including an on-site tour and classroom learning on environmental impacts, geology and mining reclamation.
