About the Program
The Austin Community Landfill program is operated by WM in Austin, Texas. The site is situated close to Lake Walter E. Long and Walnut Creek, and is approximately ten miles northeast of downtown Austin. At the site, the project team manage a landscaped garden which covers approximately 2,800 square feet. The garden contains an abundance of native plants and trees, which are maintained to benefit a variety of beneficial and threatened native pollinator species, including bumblebees and monarch butterflies

Practices and Impacts
  • The on-site garden contains 42 species of native plants out of 48 total species. Each was selected for their qualities as nectar sources with varied bloom times, or as butterfly host plants. In addition, there are four out of eight native tree species. Invasive plants are removed to prevent spread and allow native plants to thrive.
  • The project team monitors the garden and ensures it is mulched, trimmed and watered as needed to maintain the healthy growth of the plants.
  • Pollinators such as the American bumblebee and numerous butterfly and moth species have been observed in the garden. Two migratory species of butterflies, the monarch and snout-nosed butterfly, have been observed in the garden area in 2023.
