About the Program
WM's High Acres Landfill and Recycling Center site in New York includes more than 50 acres of mixed wetlands, which also host a number of bird conservation and educational programs connected to the wetland habitat. The site's active projects aim to protect wetland habitat and its buffers, conserve native bird diversity and support the educational goals of local university programs.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team monitors and maintains 28 bird boxes and contributes data to the global eBird database to monitor and better understand native bird populations.
  • More than 50 acres of wetlands are actively management and monitored, including monitoring and removing invasive species and planting native wetland species such as elderberry, dogwoods, silky willow and buttonbush.
  • Students from the Rochester Institute of Technology are actively involved with monitoring and managing the site's wetland habitats, contributing to multiple graduate theses and other academic projects.
