About the Program
The Enbridge, Inc. Big Sandy Pipeline is 69 miles in length and runs through eastern Kentucky. The pipeline connects with the Tennessee Gas Pipeline, carrying natural gas to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast markets. The Enbridge team currently manages the right-of-way (ROW) to promote native grassland vegetation benefiting a wide variety of wildlife species.

Practices and Impacts
  • In 2007, the Enbridge team initiated the 100-acre grassland project with the goal of providing habitat for grassland wildlife species, thereby increasing overall biodiversity within the ROW. The team hopes to inspire others in the area to follow suit with their own biodiversity work.
  • The Enbridge team monitors the vegetation within the ROW annually to determine if mowing or burning are necessary and for the presence of invasive species. Any needed maintenance activities are timed to avoid harm to ground-nesting birds.
  • Additional practices to improve the habitat for wildlife include edge feathering and creating brush piles to provide shelter. The team also installed several bluebird houses and two bat shelter structures for additional habitat opportunities.
