About the Program
The Grand Central Sanitary Landfill Program is operated in Pennsylvania by WM. It is situated in Pen Argyle, Northampton County, in southeast Pennsylvania. The site is close to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The program site contains a working landfill as well as areas that have been capped and planted with native grasses and wildflowers. The site includes over 150 acres of grassland habitat. At the site, the program team manage projects to provide nesting boxes for native raptor species, the American kestrel and barn owls.

Practices and Impacts
  • The program team maintains nesting boxes suitable for American kestrels, a bird species with declining populations in the region.
  • Nest boxes are monitored during nesting season, and American kestrels have consistently used the site for breeding.
  • The team coordinates with a local bird bander to record and share data on American kestrels, in alignment with a state conservation initiative to encourage use of nest boxes on privately owned lands and monitor the species.
