About the Program
3M Company manages a 505 acre site in Menomonie, Wisconsin, just west of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The site is located in an area that has experienced dramatic urbanization during recent decades resulting in marked declines in available habitat for wildlife species across all taxa. To help address this issue the team manages over 500 acres of mixed habitats. The primary conservation objective at this location is to provide nesting sites for eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis) along with an adjacent food source.

Practices and Impacts
  • Nest boxes have been installed to improve habitat for Eastern Bluebirds.
  • The prairie is managed and the nearby agricultural practices have been adapted to be minimally impactful and environmentally friendly.
  • Weekly monitoring of nest boxes records the birds utilizing the boxes and the presence or absence of eggs and number of hatchlings. If house sparrows were found to be utilizing a box, team members would remove the nest because house sparrows will take over bluebird boxes killing any bluebirds present if necessary.
