About the Program
3M Menomonie, in Menomonie, Wisconsin, produces a wide variety of products, including high-gloss reflective sheeting and prismatic films for traffic safety. In the northwest corner of the property is a five-acre prairie grass and wildflower area, which provides habitat for birds, insects and various other wildlife. 3M's avian project focusing on eastern bluebirds began about 17 years ago, with the conservation objective of providing optimal habitat for bluebirds.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team expanded the prairie bluebird habitat an additional two acres by tilling and planting of wildflower and grass seed in 2021.
  • In 2022, six worn nest boxes are replaced with new ones.
  • Nest box monitoring occurs weekly.
  • Monitoring results in 2021 and 2022 showed predominantly more swallows occupying the nest boxes than bluebirds.
