About the Program
The Tyrone Plant, located in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, is part of the Albemarle Corporation, a leader in producing lithium, bromide and catalyst solutions. The fifty-acre facility is just over 100 miles east of Pittsburgh and boasts a nature trail that passes through meadows, wetlands and forest. The trail is used as a setting to provide hands-on learning about ecosystem processes to local students.

Practices and Impacts
  • Since the project's inception in 2010, the team has provided hands-on learning opportunities to local fourth, fifth and sixth grade school students. In 2019, the team provided six field trips in the fall, where students participated in a four-hour educational nature walk, including activities such as dissecting a plant and planting a tree.
  • In 2020, the team worked with a local library to create virtual learning opportunities through brochures and online guided video activities and tours of the nature trail.
  • The team completes yearly maintenance on the trail and makes improvements to trail structures and other site infrastructure.
