About the Program
The DTE Allen Road Service Center Complex is located in Melvindale, Michigan, about 10 miles west of Detroit. The team there focuses on increasing pollinator habitat by planting Michigan native plants and the reduction of turf grass, mowing and stormwater runoff.

Practices and Impacts
  • The project team is helping to increase pollinator habitat by planting all native plants in the on-site grassland. Monarch butterflies, yellow jackets and bumblebees have been observed using the garden. They have aligned the project with both the Michigan Pollinator Initiative and the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge.
  • While herbicides are used as needed on equipment and gravel areas on-site, a policy has been implemented to prohibit pesticides or insecticide use in or around any of the wildlife habitat projects.
  • The team plans projects, such as mowing and controlled burns, to reduce woody species encroachment.
