About the Program
Exelon Corporation’s Superior Street Prairie is a transmission right-of-way where the team at Exelon manages 14 acres of remnant prairie (primarily dry-mesic sand and wet-mesic sand) plant communities with numerous rare and conservative species for the benefit of native pollinators and other native wildlife. The site is contiguous with Calumet City's Superior Street Prairie and the Forest Preserve of Cook County's Sand Ridge Nature Preserve and Green Lake Savanna. Combined, these areas provide over 250 acres of natural area in an otherwise urban landscape.

Practices and Impacts
  • The prairie has been managed since 2006 using annual plant surveys to guide targeted herbicide applications on non-native species. A prescribed burn was carried out in 2021.
  • Pollinator host plants, such as milkweeds, naturally occur at the site and surrounding lands. Pollinator species are monitored on-site using basic transect surveys two to three times per year.
