About the Program
The Chastang Landfill property is an active landfill where the project team manages a six-acre site to help provide habitat for monarch butterflies. The property is located in a rural area and is mostly farmland. The area is approximately 40 miles north of Mobile, Alabama. WM hopes to provide habitat for the monarch butterfly in order to help conserve the species.

Practices and Impacts
  • Pollinator plants, including milkweed, are located in the six-acre site. Potted milkweed also ensures that the perennial plant can survive over the winter. The habitat provides a migratory stopover location, shelter and water for monarchs and other pollinators.
  • The team monitors pollinator species over the summer months. Information recorded includes numbers of monarch individuals, as well as numbers and bloom times of milkweed plants. This information can help the team manage the site better to increase its value to monarchs.
