About the Program
WM’s Maplewood Recycling and Waste Disposal Facility is located in Amelia County, southwest of Richmond, Virginia. On-site are 20 acres of grasslands, 10 acres of wetlands and an additional 10 acres of ponds. The program's conservation objectives include supporting and expanding local purple martin and native bat populations by providing cavity nesting sites and habitat.

Practices and Impacts
  • Eastern purple martins are very dependent upon human-made cavities for nesting. In April 2018, a multi-unit, gourd-style purple martin complex was installed at Maplewood Landfill. The complex was placed in proximity to on-site ponds and grasslands. Regular monitoring of the structures has confirmed the presence of purple martins for several consecutive years, increasing in numbers over the past two years.
