About the Program
The WM Prairie Hill Recycling and Disposal Facility is located in northwest Illinois, surrounded by agricultural fields. This region of the United States would have historically been part of the Tallgrass Prairie; however, has been largely converted for food production. The Eastside Grassland Habitat project maintains a 25-acre grassland on-site for the benefit of native plants and prairie wildlife.

Practices and Impacts
  • Two employees conduct plant monitoring. Invasive plants and woody plants are removed.
  • A prescribed burn was conducted in 2021.
  • Over 75% of the plants identified are native, including six grass and 10 forb species.
  • Deer, fox, badgers, pheasants, butterflies, dragonflies and many birds have been observed.
  • Future plans at the facility include creating a demonstration garden to help employees and visitors become familiar with prairie plants.
