About the Program
The Eco-Vista Landfill in Arkansas is located in Springdale, Arkansas, just north of the Ozark National Forest. The property consists of 533 acres, only 360 acres of which are used in current operations. It is located within the Eastern Broadleaf Forest Province, an area that typically receives little rainfall and is thus mainly comprised of fire-maintained woodlands. This site provides a mosaic of grassland and forested habitats for a variety of songbirds, specifically eastern bluebirds. Eco-Vista utilizes mowing regimes, controlled burns and nest boxes to provide suitable habitat for bluebirds, whose population is declining nationwide.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team installed and monitors bluebird boxes along a bluebird trail.
  • Contracted, controlled burns occur every 2-3 years to maintain forest and grassland mosaic, enhancing bluebird habitat.
  • Annual mowing is conducted to control woody and invasive species.
