About the Program
Waste Management's Oak Ridge Recycling and Disposal Facility is located in north central Indiana near the Still River. The program aims to preserve and manage forest, prairie and landscaped habitats to benefit local wildlife including native birds, deer, pollinators and waterfowl. Partners and consultants are engaged in botanical assessments of the habitats.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team is presently managing a 145-acre forested area and an 11-acre wetland and open water system. Each of these systems have almost exclusively native species. The wetland and pond feature are noted as an oasis for wildlife in a highly agricultural area.
  • The seven-acre grassland is managed by seasonal brush hogging to control woody vegetation and herbicide to treat invasive plants.
  • Over two acres of property along one of the facility's roads was planted in 2016 with exclusively native trees and shrubs. This area has been very successful in helping to provide additional habitat throughout the year.
