About the Program
The 500-acre Vickery Environmental, Inc. property is located in the rural, unincorporated community of Vickery, Ohio. WM acquired the property in 1978. The site's habitats include a 40-acre pond, mixed deciduous woodlots, open grasslands and several small wetlands. The team manages 90 acres of the property for wildlife and first earned certification for the site in 2009.

Practices and Impacts
  • The team maintains a 40-acre pond by reducing the areas mowed surrounding the pond, minimizing shoreline erosion and controlling fish populations by utilizing sustainable fishing practices. Species occupying the pond include largemouth bass, yellow perch, crappies and bluegills. WM has reduced disturbance to the area by installing riprap around the water's border, thus minimizing erosion and sediment deposition.
  • The team has constructed nest boxes for bluebirds and installed raptor perches on-site, which are monitored and maintained as needed. Birds observed include tree swallows, red-tailed hawks, eagles and waterfowl.
  • The team has planted habitat for pollinators such as monarchs and honey bees. This new project consists of monitoring tor pollinators.
