Limerick Generating Station

About the Program
Limerick Generating Station's is a nuclear power station located in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Limerick sits on a 600-acre site and draws its cooling water from the Schuylkill River. The site contains a variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats that support a variety of aquatic, avian and plant species.

Practices and Impacts

• Twenty-three bird boxes were placed in various locations around the 600-acre site to encourage the nesting of cavity-nesting song birds. The boxes are monitored throughout the breeding season and are repaired/replaced as needed.
• Two bat houses were placed in strategic locations on the property to encourage local bats to roost and forage on the site. Houses are monitored throughout the summer and maintained as needed.
• Six nest boxes were placed in strategic aquatic locations throughout the site to encourage the nesting of waterfowl. The boxes are monitored throughout the breeding season and repaired/replaced as needed.
• Five raptor nest boxes and perches were placed in various locations throughout the site to encourage the nesting and roosting of local raptors. The boxes/perches are monitored throughout the breeding season and maintained as needed.
• European water chestnut (EWC) is an invasive aquatic plant that can form dense mats of vegetation and impact both aquatic communities and water quality. The Bradshaw Reservoir — an important source of water for both local communities and the Limerick Generation Station — recently suffered an infestation of EWC. The company performs both on-the-water and drone-related monitoring to evaluate the growth of EWC, and uses both mechanical and manual approaches to plant removal to control the infestation.
