ExxonMobil’s Cold Lake Operations program is a reforestation, revegetation and seed collection initiative that encompasses 1,836 acres of forest in eastern Alberta, Canada. The main objective is to collect native plant seeds from the Cold Lake area to be used in upcoming reclamation and restoration projects.
Practices and Impacts
- Since 2014, 1,836 acres of forest habitat have been conserved. To restore the forest, planting and monitoring of suitable native trees is ongoing, as well as the monitoring of other plants and weeds on-site.
- Seeds from the area are collected, logged and stored for nearby restoration and reclamation projects.
- Seeds and seedlings are used to restore and reclaim mined sites. A comprehensive monitoring program is in place to asses the success of restorations.
- Employees oversee the execution of the program, including its monitoring and management. Assistance is provided by consultants and partnering companies.
