About the Program

Drayton Valley Aggregates - Berrymoor Pit, a part of Lafarge Canada Inc., is located in Alberta, Canada, along the North Saskatchewan River. While this site was predominately agricultural prior to mining activities the team is now working to add varied habitat as part of their reclamation activities. 
Practices and Impacts
  • Team members have created 31 acres of wetlands following gravel removal.
  • Team members have installed and monitor numerous nesting boxes for American Kestral
  • Team members coordinate with researchers to mark kestrals with GPS trackers in an effort to improve knowledge of species biology.
  • Team members have installed and monitor Saw-Whet owl nesting boxes.
  • Team members actively monitor the habitat for mammals via game cameras.
  • Team members actively monitor the habitat for amphibians with a special focus on frog species.
  • Team members plan and host an annual open-house focused on engaging community members in their owl monitoring and banding.
