About the Program
Almost 200 acres of the WM Elk River Landfill, Inc. are set aside for wildlife habitat enhancement projects within the 510-acre property in Elk River, Minnesota. Located just northwest of Minneapolis, the habitat program was first certified in 2010. The site contains quality native plant communities, including oak savannah and tamarack swamp. The latter is part of a larger wetland complex that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources deemed a Regionally Significant Ecological Area. The preservation of wildlife space at Elk River Landfill, Inc. benefits a host of wildlife species both on-site and in the surrounding natural ecosystems. The team observes bald eagles, wood ducks and white-tailed deer on site.

Practices and Impacts
  • Since 2011, the team has maintained a landscaped pollinator garden of native wildflowers that provide food and nectar for local pollinators.
