About the Program
Waste Management's Evergreen Landfill, Inc project is located in Blairsville, PA, USA. The site contains 1.425 acres of mitigated wetlands which provide a slow release runoff to an unnamed tributary of Laurel Run. The objective of the wetlands is to provide sediment retention/filtering, nutrient assimilation, biomass accumulation and support for local wildlife. The Be Bear Aware project encourages employees to be aware of their surroundings and to provide them the tools necessary to react if they have a bear encounter on-site. The team creates, enhances and/or restores bat habitat on-site for one or more of the targeted species that have been confirmed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) to inhabit Pennsylvania year-round or seasonally based on migratory patterns.
Practices and Impacts
- The team monitors and maintains three parceled wetland areas.
- The team conducted a training to make employees and those who are a part of the business environment on-site, more "aware" of the ramifications of actions that will entice bears or incite bears. Employees are also asked to document bear sightings on-site.
- The team installed four bat boxes in September 2019 and monitors and maintains them.
