About the Program
WM operates the Greater Wenatchee Regional Landfill and Recycling Center located a few miles east of East Wenatchee, Washington. The facility actively provides waste disposal services to commercial customers in the local area. One hundred acres of primarily desert habitat surrounding the landfill are monitored, with the end goal being to phase in actions that promote biodiversity through the improvement of habitat quality, which will be partially achieved through the control of invasive plant species and re-seeding of native species.

Practices and impacts
  • The team has been monitoring kestrels in and near nest boxes on-site for over a decade. Over time, kestrels of all ages have been consistently documented on landfill property.
  • Knapweed is actively monitored throughout the year, and past attempts to control it include the release of knapweed weevil as an alternative to chemical controls. Reduction to the percentage of land area covered by knapweed will be slow, given that knapweed is notoriously difficult to extirpate because minimal disturbance encourages seeding.
