About the Program
First certified in 2010, Waste Management's Phoenix Resources Landfill encompasses 1,945 acres in northern Pennsylvania, near the town of Wellsboro. The Wildlife Management Team actively manages 1,879 acres of the property as wildlife habitat. The facility is adjacent to a 2,500-acre property operated by a private forestry company and 4,150 acres of forested state land managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Practices and Impacts
  • Phoenix's 5.45-acre three-pond wetland system filters water entering Babb Creek, which provides about 13 percent of Pine Creek’s water flow.
  • The wetland system contains all native plants with about 60% scrub shrub, 25% emergent vegetation and 15% open water to provide a variety of habitat features.
  • Team members participate in an annual safety education event that works to ensure all personnel on-site are prepared for potential encounters with native bear species.
